Patient Testimonial – Avera Queen of Peace

March 6, 2020

Avera Queen of Peace Hospital Wound Care & Hyperbaric Treatment Center

Patient Champion: William Oakley

William “Bill” Oakley, 67, a long-time resident of Mitchell, S.D., came to our clinic on Nov. 25, 2019 for help in healing his venous stasis ulcer. He was officially discharged from our services on Feb. 2, 2020.

“I have had an open sore on my right lower leg for approximately 30 years. I have been working with another doctor trying to get it healed, but we couldn’t get it done. I’ve also had five surgeries for varicose veins – we dried them up, we stripped them, we’ve done everything, but still no healing. Finally,
I asked my doctor if I can see a wound doctor. And he said yes, there is one here in town, so this is where we came.”

“I have been coming to the wound center for about eight weeks. It was a slow process at first and then we turned the corner. The staff is excellent, friendly, courteous. I really liked that they told me what they were going to do and what to expect. I felt like I was very well informed. The good news after all these years is that I am done wrapping my leg, it is completely healed up!

I can get in hot tubs, swimming pools, and do the stuff I love to do again. I’m going to get my life back!” “I am just so thrilled and tickled with this. My wife and I have been fighting this for a long time and it’s so, so good to get all the swelling out of my leg. The pain is gone, we’re exercising and doing things again! I love it.”

Bill came to our clinic weekly for treatments with our team and provider Rachel Dykstra, CNP. He received sharp surgical debridements, utilized five applications of a skin substitute, and had multilayer compression wraps applied.

We, as a team, were so happy to help him heal. Both Bill and his wife were such a joy to work with! These are the kinds of outcomes that make you appreciate the advanced services you can provide to your community!
