Patient Testimonial – Ochsner St. AnneJanuary 6, 2020
Ochsner St. Anne Hospital Wound Healing Center
Patient Champion: Ralph Fremin
Mr. Ralph Fremin, 72, is a Vietnam veteran and lifelong resident of Raceland, Louisiana, who retired after 30 years of offshore work with a chemical company. Mr. Fremin noticed he seemed to be having more personal health challenges, including a heart condition, diabetes and venous hypertension (high pressure in the veins of the legs) – which all seemed to be getting worse.
He was already working with Dr. Anil Chagarlamudi with the Cardiovascular Institute ofthe South to address his heart and vein issues, when it was discovered he had a wound on his leg. He was then referred to Ochsner St. Anne’s Wound Healing Center for an evaluation.
Mr. Fremin was diagnosed with a venous stasis ulcer, which was a result of excess fluid buildup due to his venous hypertension. While under the care of the wound center, he received bi-weekly dressing changes and compression therapy. The care from the wound center, in conjunction with the cardiovascular care he was receiving from Dr. Chagarlamudi, put Mr. Fremin on the path to healing.
During his visits to the wound center, Mr. Fremin noticed that the wound care staff really enjoyed and took pride in what they do. They took time to explain everything to him and treated him with respect. As Mr. Fremin continued to heal, there was a noticeable change in his attitude. He started joking around with the staff more and would refer to his visits as his “spa day”. He is now walking more comfortably, which has made it easier for him to do the things he enjoys, such as playing with his grandkids and blacksmithing. Mr. Fremin is happy to have earned the title of Ochsner St. Anne’s “Sore Loser”.
