TGMC Center for Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine heals patient’s charcot foot
Before Wanda Alleman was referred to TGMC Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine by Orthopedic Surgeon Meredith Warner, MD, she had spent a large portion of her adult life dealing with a condition called Charcot foot.
Charcot foot causes weakening of the bones in the foot and can occur in people who have significant nerve damage (neuropathy). The bones can become weakened enough to fracture, causing the affected foot to change shape. The change in foot shape sometimes makes the patient prone to foot sores (ulcers) and also may require surgery to correct.
On February 2, 2019, Wanda came to the TGMC Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine to be evaluated for a combination of wound care and hyperbaric services.
During her evaluation, Wanda expressed her fears to the center staff about being placed in the hyperbaric chamber to treat her Charcot foot. She was reassured through education, communication, demonstration and compassion from the staff that she was in safe hands and not alone in her journey.
Wanda’s determination to regain her life, combined with the support from her treatment team, gave her the courage to begin the hyperbaric treatments.
Through the use of advanced wound care modalities and a strong faith and support system, Wanda can proudly say that her wound has healed! No longer feeling hopeless, Wanda can see the bright light at the end of the tunnel and feels that she is truly blessed to have accomplished her goal.
Her last treatment day was a celebration full of emotion, as she was able to ring our signature “Sore Loser Bell.”
